welcome to my plant collection page!!

i have always had an interest in plants generally speaking, but i got interested in houseplants specifically in 2018, when i bought a marble queen pothos at my local grocery store (of all places)!! i became quickly obsessed with filling my living space with as much greenery as possible. caring for plants gave me a sense of routine and stability and something to look forward to while i was in a very unhealthy, abusive relationship. i spent all my free time devouring as much information about houseplants as i possibly could- watching youtube videos, checking out books from the library, reading scientific journals, blog posts, etc. fast forward to now and i have a nice collection of plants and i work as a houseplant consultant and department head at a garden supply store/nursery where i get to infodump on customers. this also means i am in charge of ordering!! which is very fun and sometimes financially dangerous for me. (the employee discount is pretty sweet though.) i consider myself very fortunate to have a job in a field that is directly involved in my own special interest. at the end of the day, it is still retail and contains all the nightmares that come along with that. but at least i get to talk about and care for plants in the process.

because i live in an apartment with very little natural light, i rely heavily on grow lights to help supplement the conditions my plants need. light is the most important factor to consider when deciding where to place your plant. i currently have 8 different grow light "stations" set up around my apartment. i have purchased a number of grow lights from a number of different places and at a number of different price points. i have also invested in a light meter so i can really measure how effective the grow lights are. skip those cheap pink lights from amazon. (skip amazon all together if you can!!) i highly recommend the grow lights from barrina!! they are affordable without sacrificing the quality. i recommend ordering directly from their website- they usually have coupons and if they have any sort of sale going on the discounts are stackable!!

some plant supplies i find helpful!!
this next section is a list of all my plants, some of which will be links to individual pages where i further discuss particular plants and track their growth :) i'm always happy to help people with their plants, so if you have any questions or want advice i can try my best to give you the information!! (i will say sometimes diagnosing an issue over e-mail can be difficult because a lot of houseplant issues can have multiple possible causes, but i am happy to help you troubleshoot!!)

you can e-mail pictures/questions here: neopetgameboy@protonmail.com

hoya is my favorite and most collected genus. they are a semi-epiphytic genus that prefer bright light. most species have rather succulent leaves and as a result they are very forgiving to being under-watered. with the right care and some patience, they can reward growers with clusters of blooms referred to as peduncles. their blooms are scented!! ranging from chocolate to jasmine to citrus, etc!! truly a wonderful plant all around.

  • hoya 'krimson queen'
  • hoya burtoniae
  • hoya linearis
  • hoya lacunosa
  • hoya kerrii 'splash'
  • hoya wilbur graves
  • hoya lacunosa 'silver'
  • hoya mathilde

  • philodendrons were the genus that really got me excited about growing plants!! such a diverse genus with so many variances between species and fairly easy to grow. i was always lusting after the big specimens on moss poles, but alas, apartment living with little space does not really make sense for a lot of moss poles. instead, i often opt for species that grow trailing or self-heading, that don't necessarily require something to climb.
  • philodendron burle marx
  • philodendron brasil
  • philodendron strawberry shake
  • philodendron silver stripe
  • philodendron florida ghost
  • philodendron florida beauty
  • philodendron green congo 'nuclear'
  • philodendron hederaceum var.
  • pothos (also known as epipremnum) is a very common houseplant and for good reason. they are very tolerable to different lighting conditions and can bounce back easily from being over or under watered. they grow fast and are easy to propagate thanks to the surplus of auxin they produce. typically grown trailing, these plants are also semi-epiphyitic, and when grown climbing the shape and size of the leaves can change. the main two species of epipremnum are aureum and pinnatum. the main different between the two is that aureum leaves are typically a rounder, heart shape and pinnatum have a more slender shape. pinnatum leaves can produce fenestrations when given something to climb.

it is a goal of mine to grow a pothos climbing soon, as i have never done that before and would like to try!!
