the 1998 electronic toy sensation: furbies!!! my first interaction with a furby was getting a keychain one from mcdonalds- from their 2000 happy meal toys. i still have one from way back then and have picked up a few more via ebay or thrift stores over the years. i would have been about 7 years old then. a christmas or two after that we got a "real" furby for christmas!! mine was the skunk colorway and i believe my sister got a grey and pink snow leopard one. they follow a similiar vein of virtual/electronic pet (neopets, tamagotchi, etc.) that was always so alluring to me. these creatures have something about them that while being cute is also sort of unsettling. and i enjoy that sort of cute/creepy tension. it seems like everyone has a story about how their furby was talking even when it was turned off. idk if we are all just full of shit or were paranoid kids but i swear ours did the same thing.

i was recently getting my car fixed and one of the employees working there commented on my furby tattoo. they began discussing furby's banishment from federal buildings (something i was completely unaware of) based off the premise that government officials asserted that furbies could record conversation and potentially repeat sensitive or classified information. which is untrue. idk. this made me like furbies even more knowing that the US government thinks they are spies or something 0:-)
